Everybody keeps a shoebox full of mementos from past lovers. Eventually that box is going into the landfill, whether you throw it out or your kids do after you die. Wouldn't you rather do it yourself, and spare them the knowledge their other parent wasn't your first love? You might even get a new song out of it... especially if It Still Hurts.
